Glossary term:

Aortic wall

The aortic wall is a three-layer structure comprising:

  • the intima or endothelium: a thin, blood compatible layer on the inside of the aorta,
  • the media: a thicker, middle layer of the aorta carrying some of the hydraulic load imposed by the blood pressure, and the
  • adventitia: a substantial, outer layer of the aorta.
