Aortic insufficiency / regurgitation is a result of aortic valve disease.
It develops when the aortic valve isn’t able to close fully. Because the aortic valve doesn’t close properly, blood flowing from the heart can leak (or regurgitate) back into the heart. This means less blood reaches the rest of the body. To compensate for this, the heart has to work harder to ensure enough blood reaches the rest of the body. This places additional strain on the heart.
The Ross-PEARS procedure is one option for surgical treatment of this condition.
